Diane Drescher > Drawings

Drawings

I used a wax resist technique for these drawings: pencil, wax, ink wash, charcoal, conte crayon on paper. This medium requires working quickly and, because it is an inexact technique, it is necessary to accommodate unexpected "accidents" into the art-making process. In fact after the first ink wash, the artwork takes on a life of it's own.

Each drawing is part of a series — usually 8-10 drawings in total. I am prompted to do these images because of a deeply felt experience about our current social / political situation. They are, I believe, both personal and universal.

The technique is rare but Henry Moore, the sculptor, employed it when he made his well-known renderings of people seeking shelter in the London tubes during air raids of WWII.
